French politician and philosopher (1809-1865) who was the first to describe himself as an anarchist. ALS in French, signed “P. L. Proudhon,” one page both sides, 4.25 x 5.5, April 1860. Handwritten letter by Proudhon to his friend Auguste Rolland, with whom he had a significant correspondence. In full (translated): "Ah! Is your colic over? Have you come back from Anvers? Have you finished your translation? Have you begun to write another book? I have scolded my wife for not having the courage to come back as soon as Mrs. Rolland was unable to leave you. However, advising a child of Paris to miss a comedy at the theatre is like telling the chauvinist of the suburbs not to go to see the triumph of this man.
Do you know that, because of your travel and the bad weather, I have not stopped at all? Do you know that I have a hellish thirst, and that a glass of Bavaria would be delicious with a game of dominoes? Now Ortega has been executed, Sicily put in order again, Savoie and Nice have come along. The rest of this year seems bound to pass in the entertainment of the Châlons camp, the trip of LL. MM. to Nice, and the 15 August fireworks. Let us take advantage of the rest granted to us to make glow far away this revengeful flame of Justice. I know the issues of my books are sliced for the clandestine editions in Paris. The second Bulletin has been like lightning, and the friend Lebègue is not without fear. My garnisaire asks me to pass her sincere friendship on her behalf to your bodyguard. [Proudhon here probably humorously refers to his wife and his friend’s wife.] Give me a word of presence, and believe me your damned soul, to life, to death." In fine condition.
