Classical liberal American social scientist and economist (1840-1910) who supported laissez-faire economics, free markets, and the gold standard; he was a champion of the 'forgotten man' of the middle class (a term he coined) and had a long-term influence on conservatism in the United States. ALS signed “W. G. Sumner,” one page, 4.5 x 7, December 23, 1892. Handwritten letter to C. E. Young, in part: "On my return from Europe I find here yrs of June 20, wh. as printed matter, was not forwarded to me. In reply I wd say that I accept the appointment on the Advisory Council on African Ethnology." In fine condition, with rusty circular paperclip impressions to the top, as well as a faint red notation.
