Description

Politician and diplomat (1792-1864) who served as Vice President under James K. Polk from 1845 to 1849; the city of Dallas, Texas, is said to be named for him. ALS signed “G. M. Dallas,” one page, 7.25 x 8.75, February 6, 1851. Handwritten letter to Secretary of the Navy William Alexander Graham, in full: "I have been requested to state to you my opinion of the merits of Mr. Henry R. Mifflin, who had been employed at the Navy Yard on board the Receiving Ship Union, and who had applied to be appointed a second master, the death of Mr. Burnet producing a vacancy. Personally, I do not know Mr. Mifflin:—but as all the officers on this station unite in speaking of him as an experienced seaman and reliable officer, I should deem his appointment a just appreciation of real merit, and eminently deserved by past service." In fine condition.
