Description

"It is the sincere desire of the President to appoint to office none but worthy & capable men & sterling democrats"

American lawyer, economist, and politician (1801-1869) who served as Secretary of the Treasury in Polk's administration. ALS signed “R. J. Walker,” one page, 8 x 10, April 7, 1845. Handwritten letter to Senator John M. Niles, in part: "No paper could be found from you recommending any one for this station. As to the rumor to which you refer…it is entirely without foundation.
