Description

"You have wished that my illustrious friend, Victor Hugo, gave you some verses by him which you could read in public"

French statesman and historian (1811-1882) who was forced to abandon his post as a member of the provisional government and flee to England after the Revolution of 1848. ALS in French, one page both sides, 5.25 x 8.25, December 9, 1868. Handwritten letter to a gentleman, in part: "Several of our compatriots having formed a Literary Society in Brighton, you have wished that my illustrious friend, Victor Hugo, gave you some verses by him which you could read in public. That's what he did…You ask me for a similar token of sympathy. I take care not to refuse it to you, and I will send you, in a few days, about ten pages in which I will try to show what form of poetry and what kind of poetic feeling correspond to the various ages in the life of people." In fine condition.
