Description

Politician (1755-1829) of the French Revolution, who was the main executive leader of the Directory regime of 1795 to 1799; he is remembered for his political corruption and dubious morality in his public and private life. Manuscript DS in French, signed “P. Barras,” one page, 8.5 x 13, no date. Petition by "Citoyen Corbin," making reference to the important abolitionist Léger-Félicité Sonthonax, who proclaimed freedom for all slaves in the north province of Saint-Domingue in 1793. In part: "Citizen Corbin claimed the three Flags which accompanied the Citizen of Color to the National Convention to hand them over to the Citizen Santonox Commissioner of St. Domingo." Barras pens a three-line endorsement in the upper left. In very good condition, with scattered foxing, an irregularly trimmed left edge, and ink erosion to lettering along the top.
