Politician and lawyer (1754-1838) of the French Revolution, who served as president of the National Convention in 1794, and of the Directory in 1798 and 1799; he voted for the execution of King Louis XVI. ALS in French, signed “Merlin (d. d.) p'r.,” one page, 7.25 x 9.25, Comité de Salut Public letterhead, August 19, 1795. Handwritten letter ordering the immediate return of "Citoyen Scherer, General en chef de l'Armée des Pyrénées Orientales" to receive further orders. Also signed at the conclusion by Étienne-François Letourneur. In fine condition, with scattered soiling. On August 31, 1795, Barthélemy Louis Joseph Schérer was sent to Italy to replace Francois Kellerman as commander-in-chief of the Army of Italy.
