English writer and printer (1689-1761) known for his three epistolary novels: Pamela: Or, Virtue Rewarded; Clarissa: Or the History of a Young Lady; and The History of Sir Charles Grandison. Partly-printed DS, signed “Saml. Richardson,” one page, 7.25 x 11.5, June 2, 1745. Official "Tonnage" document, in part: "Received by me Ram'l Richardson assignee of Geo. Churchill and Hugh Chudleigh, of the Honourable Horatio Walpole, Esq., One of the Four Tellers of His Majesty's Receipt of Exchequer, the Sum of Six pounds & five Shill's." In very good condition, with overall foxing and soiling, and small tears to edges. At this time Richardson was working on the seminal work Clarissa, regarded as a masterpiece of English literature and one of the longest novels ever written.
