Naval officer (1839-1911) who commanded the destruction of the Spanish fleet at Santiago de Cuba and who led the expedition to rescue Adolphus Greeley in the arctic. ALS signed “W. S. Schley,” one page, 4.5 x 7, January 24, 1910. Handwritten letter referring to his namesake, in part: "Would you mind lending me for a few days the picture of Gen'l Scott to have it photographed for me in an article I am preparing in which I refer to him as being my sponsor at baptism!" In fine condition.
