Commodore in the US Navy (1772-1838) who served in the Quasi-War with France, both Barbary Wars in North Africa, and the War of 1812 with Britain, and played a major role in the development of the standards, customs, and traditions of the American navy. LS signed “Jn. Rodgers,” one page, 8 x 10, May 29, 1821. Letter to Commodore Alexander Murray in Philadelphia, in part: "Mr. Rich'd Taylor is to deliver at Phila'a about 200 barrels of Pork—of this quantity 122 barrels are under contract…If on inspection this pork should be found to correspond with the contract in all essential respects, it is to be received on the following terms, viz: 50 barrels at the contract price—$14…The 50 barrels are for the Schooner Dolphin."
