Rear admiral (1846-1912) in the United States Navy, who served from the Civil War to the Spanish-American War; in 1907-1908, he commanded the Great White Fleet on its worldwide cruise from the Atlantic Ocean through the Straits of Magellan to the Pacific Ocean. ALS signed “R. D. Evans,” two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 6.25, U.S.S. Illinois letterhead, February 21, 1902. Handwritten letter to E. K. May, in part: "I am exceedingly sorry that I cannot promise to secure the autograph of Prince Henry for you. I have been compelled to decline at such requests owing to the number of them…I think you will be more likely to get what you want by addressing H.R.H. personally." In fine condition.
