Civil War-dated autograph endorsement signed "Charles Sumner," on the reverse of a letter written to him by John M. S. Williams, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 7.75 x 9.75, June 27, 1861. Sumner writes: "I ask attention to this letter & hope that Mr. Jackman may be preferred among the contractors at Newburyport." In the letter, Williams asks Sumner to refer a matter to Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles, offering information about applicants for a contract at Newburyport: "I understand from good authority that there are only two applicants from Newburyport—Mr. Townsend, & Mr. Jackman, both Democrats & that the former is backed by Enoch S. Williams, a bitter old hunker, s great sympathizer with the South—while Mr. Jackman is a more moderate Democrat, & fully in favor of supporting the present administration & has the best facilities for fulfilling the contract." In fine condition, with a rusty circular paperclip impression to the top and a few light creases.
