American commodore and politician (1795-1866) who played an integral role in the capture of California during the Mexican-American War, and was an early advocate for a propeller-driven, steam-powered navy. ALS signed “R. F. Stockton,” one page, 7.5 x 6.5, January 30, 1832. Handwritten letter from Princeton, in part: "When in Philadelphia I fully intended to pay your Bill but my incessant engagements prevented—and I entirely forgot you until today. I send now a check for the amount." Affixed to a larger sheet and in very good to fine condition, with a couple small edge tears.
