ALS signed “John Phillips, MA, FRS, Deputy Reader in Geology in the U. of Oxford,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, June 28, 1856. Handwritten letter to English botanist and taxonomist Maxwell T. Masters, in part: "As you have now entered in a career of public teaching, and have become a candidate for the vacant chair of Botany in King's College, London I am glad to be able to assure you of my entire conviction that you have all the qualities desirable in a public Instructor—that your knowledge is large & growing, your zeal of the right sort, & your habit of communicating information both agreeable & effective."
