Description

British naval officer (1718-1792) best known for his exploits during the American Revolution, particularly his victory over the French at the Battle of the Saintes in 1782; he is claimed to be the commander to have pioneered the tactic of breaking the line. ALS signed “Rodney,” one page both sides, 7.5 x 9.5, July 6, 1783. Handwritten letter concerning a real estate transaction, in part: "Yesterday afternoon I received the inclosed note from Lady R. Manners and returned her an answer. That I had sent her note to you, and you and Mr. Christie I advised her her, to trust to, for that the House &c as wanted much repair, and as you were then of busyness it would be much easier to come to a conclusion than Her Ladyship and myself, who I assured her was not the purchaser, but that (if purchased) I was to have the honour of being a tenant. Tis necessary to treat a woman in her own way, and impossible to over reach her." He adds a postscript, in part: "Lady R. has cut down the Hay and sold it—there's cunning for you—at least 200£ difference." In fine condition, with some minor staining.
