Description

British general and statesman (1721-1795) who began his military career in the War of the Austrian Succession and eventually rose to the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Forces. Two boldly penned letters by Conway to important military officials: an ALS signed "H. S. Conway," one page, 7.25 x 9.25, June 24, 1790, to Secretary at War George Yonge, in full: "I beg the fav'r of you to lay before His Majesty the inclos'd succession in room of Cornet Dolphin of the R. Reg. of Horse Guards"; and an ALS signed "H. S. Conway," three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8 x 12.75, October 7, 1794, to First Lord of the Admiralty Henry Dundas, in part: "Hearing that Lord Balearres has accepted a Command which will immediately occasion his leaving that he at present holds in Jersey, may I beg leave to represent to you the great anxiety I feel that a fit & proper person shou'd be made choice of to succeed command there…Before this change I had in the military line represented both to Ld. Amherst & to Sir Wm. Fawcett my great interest & anxious concern on this head: & had in the most earnest manner recommended a Gentleman whose military talents; activity & character I was intimately acquainted with as well as the essential quality of his thorough knowledge of the Island, the people, the state its resources & Military defences, & of every foot of the Country, which he had in person contributed to defend during the last war…I beg it may be understood Sir that I do not mean to distress Gov't by asking any rank or particular favor for Lt. Col. Murray tho' I think him worthy of any." In overall fine condition.
