Description

The pioneering plant pathologist investigates pear blight—"a disease very much dreaded by our horticulturists"

Pioneering American plant pathologist and mycologist (1850-1942) best known for his work with the parasitic rust fungi. ALS signed “J. C. Arthur, Botanist to the N. Y. Agric. Exper. Sta.,” one page, 8.5 x 11, New York Agricultural Experiment Station letterhead, March 12, 1886. Handwritten letter to the editor of Gardener's Chronicle, in part: "I am making as thorough study of diseases of pear trees known in this country as 'pear blight,' 'fire blight' and 'frozen-sap blight,' a disease very much dreaded by our horticulturists, as it is possible for me to do. A few of my European friends have been so kind as to publish accounts of this disease, asking the readers of the journals to communicate any information regarding such a malady which may have come under their observation. I have not yet learned, however, that fruit-trees in Europe are subject to this disease." In fine condition.
