Description

American statesman (1759-1817) who served as Secretary of the Treasury under James Madison. ALS signed “A. J. Dallas,” one page, 6.5 x 8, March 30, 1798. In part: "In the particular situation, in which I am placed, as council contending for Mr. Greenleaf's discharge, I think it would be indelicate to be the…instrument of arresting him." In fine condition. James Greenleaf was an early land speculator whose business collapsed in 1797, resulting in his yearlong stay in debtor's prison. His partnership in a miscalculated land deal with Aaron Burr, and Alexander Hamilton's subsequent involvement as an attorney in the suits and countersuits that resulted, heightened the tension between Burr and Hamilton in the years preceding their infamous duel.
