Description

Two items: a glossy 4 x 5.75 photo of Schweitzer with his dog outdoors, captioned and signed on the reverse in fountain pen (translated), "1961, With my beloved dog Ischu-Ischu, Albert Schweitzer"; and an ALS in German, signed "Albert Schweitzer," one page both sides, 8.25 x 10.5, March 1, 1954, signed at the top of each side, "Dr. Albert Schweitzer" and "Dr. A. Schweitzer." Handwritten letter from his hospital in Lambarene, to internationally recognized pathologist and endocrinologist Dr. Max A. Goldzieher. He expresses appreciation for information about testosterone and its role in metabolism and discusses his exhausting work schedule. He survives on only a few hours of sleep each night—from midnight to 3 AM—at which time he writes until 6:30. Working seven days a week, Schweitzer is exhausted, sleep deprived, and has not taken a vacation in years. He must personally oversee his clinic as the staff does not respond to anyone else, and his assistant, Dr. Perry, has been away and he will only allow Dr. Perry to treat him for problems such as high blood pressure. He expresses gratitude to Upjohn company for a device, possible the 'Mix-O-Vial,' for solucortef administration, and requests the third volume of Dr. Goldzieher's work. In fine condition, with some small stains to the second page of the letter, creasing and crazing to the photo's emulsion, and light soiling and old tape on its reverse. Two items offering a great, behind-the-scenes look at Dr. Schweitzer's life in Lambarene.
