Description

British statesman (1849-1895) and the father of Winston Churchill; he led the so-called Fourth Party, a group of Conservative members of Parliament who advocated social and constitutional reform. ALS signed “Randolph S. C.,” three pages both sides, 5.25 x 8.25, March 18, 1887. Handwritten letter to "Charlie," commenting on several political matters. In part: "Since we left Africa…I have been able to follow fairly well the course of political and parliamentary events. I am inclined to think that there has been a want of resolution and decision among the ministers which accounts for a good deal of time wasted; I don't believe myself in a policy of 'dawdle,' and then continuous fruitless & dreary sittings…I am so sorry to hear about poor Beach. He was a real good fellow in every way though his reserved manner & shyness prevented people from knowing him well. Think he is a great loss to the cabinet for he always spoke out his mind…Moreover he was the only man who could keep in order that artful dodger Ashbourne…I read the Admiralty statement with interest. The War Office estimates have been reduced by 200,000£ since I left." In fine condition.
