"There are two small appendages naturally in the Viper that have, more than once, suggested the idea of their being rudimental legs"

English biologist and paleontologist (1804-1892) best known for interpreting fossils and coining the term 'dinosaur.' ALS signed “Rich'd Owen,” three pages, 4 x 6, Sheen Lodge letterhead, June 9, 1860. Handwritten letter to Mr. Warre, in part: "I am much obliged by your kindness in sending on to me our friend Kingsley's contribution to our Natural History rarities. There are two small appendages naturally in the Viper that have, more than once, suggested the idea of their being rudimental legs; and I will tell you more on that matter when we next meet." In fine condition, with a small rusty paperclip impression to the top edge of the first page.
