British Astronomer Royal who held the office from 1765 to 1811, and was the first person to scientifically measure the mass of the planet Earth (1732-1811). ALS signed “Mr. Maskelyne,” one page, 4.5 x 7.5, May 3, 1777. Handwritten letter to "Mr. John Nourse, Bookseller to his Majesty," in part: "Mr. Maskelyne desires Mr. Nourse will send the last Volume of Phil. transact. which has been bound, & the other by which it was bound, by the bearer. Also that he would send some of Dr. Horsley's & Mr. Thorp's proposals among the parcel of books." In very good to fine condition, with light soiling, irregular toning, a few short edge tears, and old biographical clipping affixed at the bottom.
