Description

French dramatist, historian, archaeologist, and short story writer (1803-1870); one of his stories was the basis of the opera Carmen. ALS signed “P. Merimee,” one page both sides, 8 x 10.25, December 14, 1837. Handwritten letter relating to a request for credit to carry out excavations in Ruscinon; Merimee is of the opinion that the excavations should preferably be carried out in very famous localities, because this is where the best finds are most probable. Arles and Narbonne gave great finds but he fears that in Ruscinon they will find little. In fine condition, with a tear to the top edge. Merimee served as inspector of French historical monuments from 1830 until 1860, and was responsible for the protection of many historic sites, including the medieval citadel of Carcassonne and the restoration of the façade of the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris.
