American soldier and statesman (1733-1804) who served as a general in the American Revolution and was a member of the first session of Congress as a Senator from New York; he was the father of Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton and thus the father-in-law of Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton. ALS signed “Ph: Schuyler,” one page both sides, 6.5 x 8, November 11, 1799. Handwritten letter to James Cochran, in part: "Lot No. 14 in Glens Purchase was sold soon after my mothers decease for £479.19 and another lot in Glens Purchase soon after…for £519.7 but the number of the lot is not mentioned…paid to my Brother Cortland in part discharge of the legacy of £1000 left him by my mother. Whether there are any more lots I know not as I have not the deed." He goes on to comment on his place as heir to his father and grandfather. In very good condition, with light staining, soiling, and splitting the fold ends.
