Senior officer of the United States Army (1887-1966) who commanded the US First Army in the Western Europe Campaign of World War II; a notable 'mustang' officer who rose from private to general. ALS in pencil, two pages, 8 x 10.5, September 6, 1913. Handwritten letter from Fort McKinley, in part: "Upon looking up vouchers #1 and #2 on my retained return for 4th Quarter to see whether or not this property had been taken up, I find that voucher #2 was taken up and properly debited by that voucher #1 was through error credited thereby making me short on my return double the amount of property on that voucher. The Q.M. Sergt. here says there are two things that can be done, either for me to send a treasury deposit slip for the amount along with the receipt or in case you have double the amount of property on vou. #1 ahead that you give me your certificate in duplicate stating that you have taken this property up." In fine condition.
