British naval administrator and explorer (1764-1848) who mapped the interior of South Africa and promoted the exploration of the Arctic; the Barrow Strait in northern Canada was named in his honor. LS signed “Jno. Barrow,” one page, 8 x 12.5, March 8, 1838. As secretary to the admiralty, Barrow directs a letter to James Mayning of the HMS Talavera, relaying news of his salary increase "from the Pay of a Third Rate to that of the First Class." In fine condition.
