Description

The exiled Marxist in Mexico

Exceptional matte-finish 7.25 x 9.5 photo of Trotsky conversing with Communist artist Diego Rivera, signed and inscribed on the reverse in fountain pen, “To Comrade Ben Lieberman, Leon Trotsky, 20/I 1937, Mexico.” In very good condition, with two tears to lower edge, a crease to the lower right corner, missing lower left corner, and soiling to the signed side not adversely affecting Trotsky’s large, bold handwriting. Exiled from the Soviet Union, Trotsky arrived in Mexico in January 1937 and took refuge in the home of Rivera and Frida Kahlo, where he lived for several months; he is also portrayed in one of Rivera’s murals along with Marx and Engels. Trotsky is rare in signed photos, particularly of this larger size.
