Partly-printed vellum DS as president, one page, 14.5 x 19.75, December 26, 1908. President Roosevelt appoints Leon C. Garcia as a "First Lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps of the Army of the United States." Signed at the conclusion in fountain pen by Theodore Roosevelt, and countersigned by Acting Secretary of War Robert Shaw Oliver. In very good to fine condition, with irregular staining affecting only appearance.
Dr. Leon C. Garcia served a distinguished Army Medical career. Retiring as a colonel, he served in the Medical corps under the administrations of Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, William H. Taft, Woodrow Wilson, and Warren G. Harding. Dr. Garcia served in the Panama Canal, the Philippines, California, and other places around the world and was credited with many articles relating to infectious diseases such as malaria. His work was instrumental in helping stopping diseases that were being spread by insects.
