Description

American statesman (1782-1866) who served variously as governor of Michigan, senator, ambassador to France, secretary of war, and secretary of state. LS signed “Lew. Cass,” one page both sides, 7.25 x 9.75, April 19, 1841. Letter to German lexicographer and American consul Dr. Johann Gottfried Flügel, in full: "I received some time since your letter of 28th February, and delayed answering it because I could not give you the information you requested respecting the new Cabinet of General Harrison. The last arrivals have brought the official news of their appointments and subjoined I give you their names. Happily there seems little probability of a war between the United States and England. But under any circumstances I advise you not to give the slightest encouragement to any person to go to the United States in the hope of military employment. He would not have the least chance of success. We have head enough and hands enough at home to defend the country, and our officers are equal to any in the world. Whoever goes upon such an errand will be sure to be disappointed." The names of Harrison's updated cabinet are listed below. In fine condition.
