Description

Hoover hopes to handle a mining dispute: "I tried to present myself as a buffer state...they seem to assume that for a gorgeous 300 pounds per annum I am going to preserve peace"

Scarce ALS signed “H.,” five pages on three sets of adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, London Wall letterhead, August 21, 1908. Handwritten letter to W.J. Loring, marked "Private," concerning a dispute in the mining business. In part: "I enclose herewith a series of documents which explain themselves as far as events have proceeded up to date…I have preserved my temper…I am not certain how much more I will stand…not interested in any one else's fate. It seems simply impossible for Moreing and Wellsted to get along…I tried to present myself as a buffer state…they seem to assume that for a gorgeous 300 pounds per annum I am going to preserve peace…cannot allow myself to be threatened with law courts…nor held responsible for the growth of seeds of separation…my own personal matter is not my main concern." In very good to fine condition, with two file holes to the edge, and many scattered small insect holes to the body. Partnered with C. Algernon Moreing, the foremost mine manager in Australia, Hoover worked as a highly successful mining engineer around the world from 1895 to 1913. Loring, an expert metallurgist from California, later purchased Hoover's one-third interest in that company for $169,000. Handwritten letters by Hoover, specially at such great length, are very scarce.
