American statesman (1814-1886) who served as Governor of New York and who was the unsuccessful Democratic presidential candidate in the infamous disputed election of 1876. Three items signed by Tilden, "S. J. Tilden," including an ALS concerning a financial transaction, an LS sending thanks for "Vol. 13 of Colonial Documents," and a clipped signature. In overall fine condition, with a block of toning to the LS.
