ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5 x 8, January 1, 1882. Handwritten letter to Mr. Frothingham, in part: "After having deferred my 'calls' from day to day 'till this—my last in Boston, I still find myself unable to make an effort to visit even those friends who lodge 'neath the self same roof with me; I am so very tired after my double labor of yesterday. I know you will excuse me. I must thank you, however, for your very gratifying vote concerning my performance of 'Lear,' which I am glad you saw & liked." In fine condition.
