ALS signed “W. M. Thackeray,” one page, 6.75 x 8, November 29, 1855. Handwritten letter to S. H. Richard, penned entirely by Thackeray in an interesting manner—he writes the body in a vertical script while signing his name at an atypical slant, evidently meant to convey the impression that the letter was written by a secretary. In full: "I am obliged with sincere regret to decline your application for a benefit lecture in behalf of the Home for the Aged." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Thackeray's hand.
