Italian pope (1649-1721), born Giovanni Francesco Albani, who ascended the papal throne in 1700 and served until his death. Vellum manuscript DS, signed “G. F. Albanus,” one page, 15 x 5.5, June 1689. Papal breve in the name of Pope Innocent XI, signed by Giovanni Francesco Albani on behalf of Pope Innocent while serving as the pope's Secretary of State. Albani served as Secretary of State for Innocent XI, Alexander VIII, and Innocent XII. This is a scarce early signature of Clement XI, signed at just age 40. Documents signed by him on behalf of Pope Innocent XI are the most scarce of his pre-papal career as he held the position for only a short period of time. In 1700, Albanus was voted Pope Clement XI (1700-1721). In very good to fine condition, with light soiling and staining.
