Description

Born Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini in Italy in 1897, Paul VI reigned as pope from 1963 until his death in 1978. ANS in Italian, signed “GBM,” one page on a 5.5 x 4 personal correspondence card, February 20, 1947. Handwritten note, in full (translated): "With best wishes and greetings," with reference to Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, the Papal Nuncio to France, later Pope John XXIII in the postscript: "Letter enclosed for His Eminence Monsignor Roncalli." In very fine condition.

In 1952, Roncalli was made a Cardinal by Pope Pius XII and became Pope John XXIII upon the death of Pius in 1958. Montini became Pope Paul VI upon the death of John XXIII in 1963 (he remained pope until 1978). John XXIII was made Saint John XXIII by Pope Francis in 2014 and Paul VI was made Saint Paul VI by Pope Francis in 2018. Only eight popes have been canonized in the last 1,000 years.
