Fascinating collection of 20 original Illinois newspapers—most complete—offering contemporary coverage of Kennedy administration and the Cold War, with coverage on the Francis Gary Powers U-2 incident, goings-on in Cuba and the Soviet Union, the space race, and other topics. Includes some later newspapers with coverage of Richard Nixon's foibles and the Vietnam War. Notable headlines include "Red Spy Jet Crashes in Italy" (January 21, 1962); "U.S. Frees Spy Abel / Soviets Release U2 Pilot Powers" (February 10, 1962); "Nikita Proposes 18-Nation Parley" (February 12, 1962); "Kennedy Bares Secret U2 Probe" (February 22, 1962); "Powers' Story of U2 Mission" (March 7, 1962); "Cuba Asks Death for War Captives" (April 4, 1962); "Peace! In overall very good to fine condition, with some toning, typical edge chipping, and some creasing.
