Description

Rare Apollo-era aluminum presentation plaque, 9.5 x 12.5, awarded to George S. Trimble "in recognition of his outstanding contributions to this nation's manned space flight program and for his contributions to the success of the first manned lunar landing, July 20, 1969." The plaque features a facsimile signature of Robert Gilruth, the first director of NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center. In very good to fine condition, with light staining to blank areas, and a small bump to the lower right corner.

As Vice President for Aviation and Advanced Propulsion Systems at the Glenn L. Martin Company, Trimble founded the Research Institute for Advanced Study (RIAS) in Baltimore, Maryland, where his main focus, he asserted, would be on 'Space flight and the control of the force of gravity itself for propulsion.' On March 6, 1967, he joined NASA as Director of the Advanced Manned Missions Program, Office of Manned Space Flight, and on October 12, 1967, he was appointed by Gilruth to be the Deputy Director of MSC, a position he held until October 1969.
