Description

Handsome bronze memorial relief plaque featuring a raised relief image of George Washington profile, crowned with laurels, after the drawing by Charles Balthazar Julien Fevret de Saint-Memin. The plaque measures 10 x 12.75, and has a mounting loop on the reverse. In fine condition. Accompanied by a 1931 letter written to noted Washington descendant/collector W. Lanier Washington, in part: "Answering your favor, I beg to inform you that I have a bronze plaque of Washington by Houdon which Dr. Eisen as well as Mr. MacGurk verified its authenticity…If you are coming to New York this week, may I ask for an appointment?…I would very much like to see your collection." A typed draft of a response on the reverse states that he is only buying actual necessities, on account of the "stringency of the depression." Also includes the original Anderson Galleries auction catalog for W. Lanier Washington's collection.
