ALS signed “Wm. H. Taft,” one page, 5.5 x 9, War Department letterhead, July 14, 1904. Handwritten letter to George B. Cortelyou, evidently a copy made by Taft and sent to Alex Sands. In part: "Alex C. Sands, Jr. wishes to secure a place in the Republican National Committee's service. Sands' father was an old Republican politician of Ohio and his son has had a similar experience. He is a journalist by profession and the last time I knew, he was an employee of the Cincinnati Enquirer as telegraph editor. He has had much journalistic experience…I should like to see him get a place but I have no more information as to his qualifications than I have written." In fine condition, with some creasing and pin holes to the top. Taft served as Secretary of War under Theodore Roosevelt from 1904 to 1908; George B. Cortelyou served variously as Secretary of Commerce and Labor, Postmaster General, and Secretary of the Treasury in Roosevelt's administration.
