Early ALS signed “Grover Cleveland, Sheriff,” one page, 8 x 10, Sheriff's Office, Erie County letterhead, February 19, 1872. Handwritten letter concerning a legal matter, in part: "In the matter of Bell vs. Saunders, the defendant is a lawyer at our bar, and has promised to pay your execution from time to time; and we confidently expected the money last week. He has not paid however, and last Saturday he began the defence of a man on trial for murder, which is still in progress and will keep him engaged a day or two longer. He now promises to pay without fail this week, and his father who is his partner, says if he does not, he himself will pay the first of next week." In fine condition. Cleveland served as sheriff of Erie County—his first elected office—from 1871 to 1873.
