American statesman (1762-1816) who served as Washington's personal secretary and later assumed posts in the Jefferson and Madison administrations. LS, one page, 7.75 x 9.75, November 2, 1815. Letter written on behalf of the "Department of War, Accountant's Office," in part: "On settlement of the Accounts of Lieut. Eliphalet Ripley, late of the 37th Inf'y a balance is found due from him to the United States on a/c of Bounties." In fine condition.
