William Golding on symbolism in The Spire

ALS, one page, 8.25 x 11.5, personal letterhead, January 20, 1984. Handwritten letter to Dr. Talbot, in part: "I'm glad you find my work interesting. With regard to the blue bird, your assumptions may well be correct…I used the flash of the blue bird (kingfisher) for just those significances towards the end of my novel The Spire: a use that has drawn favorable comments." In very good to fine condition, with edge creasing (heaviest at the top), handling wear, and punch holes to the left side.
