Partly-printed DS, signed “Will'm Henry Harrison,” one page, 12.5 x 7.75, October 1, 1804. As governor of the Indiana Territory and of the District of Louisiana, Harrison appoints Andrew Welson "to be Recorder of our said District of New Madrid." The white paper seal affixed to the lower left remains intact. In very good condition, with toning, staining, and separations along the somewhat fragile folds. After the conclusion of the Louisiana Purchase, Harrison—then serving as governor of the Indiana Territory—was assigned to administer the civilian government of the District of Louisiana. He remained in that position until the Louisiana Territory was formally established on July 4, 1805, and Brigadier General James Wilkinson assumed the duties of governor.
