Battlefield orders amidst the Civil War: "Assume command. Defend the line...secure a safe retreat"

Civil War-dated manuscript orders signed by his aide-de-camp on his behalf, “By order Genl. I. N. Palmer Comd'g, L. Hoffman, A.D.C.,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, May 23, [docketed 1863 on the reverse]. Manuscript orders to "Col. Codman," handwritten by Hoffman at Palmer's direction, in part: "Col. Codman…will proceed at once with 7 co. of his Regt. by train, to Bachelers Creek. Assume command. Defend the line of Bachelers Creek as long as practicable to secure a safe retreat there…our fighting ground is here." In very good to fine condition, with colorful dampstaining affecting only appearance.
