Description

Union Army officer (1842-1864) and son of Montgomery C. Meigs. He served as aide-de-camp to General Phillip Sheridan, and was killed by Confederate scouts after he mistook them for friendly Union men. Civil War-dated ALS signed “John R. Meigs,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, Headquarters Middle Military Division letterhead, September 2, 1864. Handwritten letter to Brevet Major General W. W. Averell, in part: "While I am very sorry to be obliged to do anything against your wishes I am yet compelled to order Mr. Topping to these headquarters. Having an officer in Cumberland & one here also I must leave one or the other without anyone to take charge of it unless I have Mr. Topping's services. I shall always be ready to do anything I can to secure his appointment in the Army but I do not now see any good opportunity to effect it." In very good to fine condition, with scattered staining.
