Description

Union general (1794-1870) who served as US Army's 5th Chief of Ordnance, and was instrumental in the early days of the war in modernizing the artillery's ordnance. Civil War-dated LS signed “Ja's W. Ripley,” one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, Ordnance Office letterhead, March 20, 1865. Letter to Major J. T. Sprague, in part: "It is very desirable that this office should possess a file of the Gen'l Orders issued from the Head Quarters of New York from the time that it was established…including the whole term of Governor Morgan's command." In fine condition.
