ALS signed "Danl. Webster," one page both sides, 7.75 x 9.75, February 24, 1823. Handwritten letter to Dudley L. Pickman, in part: "The difficulty in the case, in the opinion of the Commissioner, is the…proof that this case was even made the subject of memorial to our Government; without which it is thought not possible to bring the claim within the Treaty…I have said, now, the substance of all that was said this morning, in deciding the case. If I should hear anything further, I will communicate it." Webster adds a lengthy postscript, "Since writing the above, I have examined your letter to the Secretary of State, March 14th, 1821, in which you state, that this frigate, at the time of capture, was 'in private employment'—if this point could be established, it might help save the case." Addressed on the reverse of the second integral page in his own hand. In very good condition, with seal-related paper loss and partial separations along adjoining fold.
