Description

"'Castratory'—has castrate ever been turned into an adjective?"

TLS, one page both sides, 6 x 8, personal letterhead, August 29, 1979. Letter to publisher Philip Dosse, in part: "Coming back from a long absence I have found the June and July numbers of Books and Bookmen. I am delighted by Anthony West's article on Perkins called The Perfect Editor. It was what in a way I was planning to do on American editing but now I can throw away the book by Dorothy Cummins What is an Editor and all the notes of the article which I have failed to write for you. In any case it wouldn't have been as good as Anthony West's…P.S. All the same I wish your editors had turned Durgnat's article on Sade into English. 'To shorthand'—has shorthand ever before been used as a verb? 'Castratory'—has castrate ever been turned into an adjective? If words are to be invented to enlarge the English language I don't think it's the job of somebody called Durgnat." In fine condition.
