Description

Massachusetts lawyer (1731-1814) who served as one of the prosecutors of British soldiers during the Boston Massacre trial; he later signed the Declaration of Independence. Partly-printed DS, signed “Paine,” one page, 7.5 x 6.5, August 6, 1765. Document issued to the Sheriff of Bristol County, in part: "We Command you to Attach the Goods or Estate of Robert Caldwell of Taunton of the same county merchant, to the Value of Ten Pounds, and for want thereof to take the Body of the said Robert…and him safely keep, so that you have him before Our Justices of Our Inferiour Court of Common Pleas…to answer unto John Adam." Endorsed upside down on the reverse by Paine. The document is attached to an eight-page financial ledger accounting for transactions between Caldwell and Adam. In very good to fine condition.
