Description

Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Rhode Island (1727-1820). Manuscript DS, signed within the text “W. Ellery,” one page both sides, 8 x 12.75, April 1, 1811. Handwritten docketing notation made by William Ellery on the reverse of a letter sent to him by Daniel E. Updike of Wickford, Rhode Island, which reads: "D'l E. Updike, with his acct against W. Ellery Stated & closed to the 1st of Ap'l 1811 and balanced in his great ledger, Feb. 5." Updike's letter relates to monies owed by him to Ellery. Archivally mounted and matted to show the front of the letter; the reverse, which bears Ellery's signature and handwriting, can be discerned on a copy affixed to the reverse of the frame, which measures to an overall size of 14.5 x 19.5. In fine condition, with some minor paper loss along the folds.
